The Kafirs of Kafiristan

The Kafirs of Kafiristan, now known as Nuristan, were an ancient ethnic and religious group in the mountainous region of Afghanistan. They practiced a unique form of polytheism and maintained distinct cultural traditions until the late 19th century. In 1896, they were forcibly converted to Islam under the Afghan ruler Abdur Rahman Khan. Their original beliefs and customs have largely vanished, but the term "Kafir" historically referred to non-Muslims. Today, Nuristan is recognized for its diverse culture, stunning landscapes, and the remnants of the Kafir people's heritage.
