The Invisible Gorilla experiment
The Invisible Gorilla experiment, conducted by Daniel Simons and Christopher Chabris, highlights how our minds can overlook obvious details when focused on a task. In the experiment, participants watched a video of people passing a basketball and were instructed to count how many passes were made. While they focused on the counting, a person in a gorilla suit walked through the scene. Surprisingly, about half of the viewers failed to notice the gorilla. This illustrates the concept of "inattentional blindness," showing that when we're concentrated on one thing, we can miss significant events happening all around us.
