The Free Soil Party

The Free Soil Party was a political group in the United States founded in 1848. Its main goal was to oppose the expansion of slavery into the western territories. It attracted members who were concerned about the impact of slavery on free labor and the rights of white settlers. The party's motto, "Free Soil, Free Speech, Free Labor, and Free Men," emphasized a vision of a nation where free individuals could work and thrive without competition from slave labor. The Free Soil Party later merged into the Republican Party, which continued the fight against the spread of slavery.
