The Calman Commission

The Calman Commission was established in 2008 to review the powers and responsibilities of the Scottish Parliament. Its goal was to consider how to improve governance and ensure that Scotland had the right tools to address its own challenges. The Commission proposed a range of changes, including more financial powers for Scotland to manage its own budget and rely less on Westminster. In 2012, its recommendations were implemented through the Scotland Act 2012, which granted Scotland new tax-raising powers, aiming to enhance its autonomy and accountability in governance.
