The Benin Bronzes

The Benin Bronzes are a group of intricately designed metal plaques and sculptures created by the Edo people of the Kingdom of Benin (in present-day Nigeria) between the 13th and 19th centuries. They were originally part of the royal palace and depicted historical figures, events, and cultural symbols. In 1897, British soldiers looted many of these artworks during a punitive expedition, leading to widespread dispersal in museums around the world. Today, the Benin Bronzes are significant cultural artifacts, sparking discussions about cultural heritage, repatriation, and colonial history.
