Texcoco Lake Project
The Texcoco Lake Project, also known as the New International Airport for Mexico City (NAICM), aimed to build a major airport on the former Texcoco Lake site. This location was chosen to alleviate congestion at the existing Mexico City airport. The plan involved significant infrastructure development, including runways and terminals, to handle millions of passengers annually. However, the project faced environmental concerns, social opposition, and financial challenges. In 2018, the newly elected government canceled the project, focusing instead on upgrading the existing airport and using a military airbase to meet aviation needs while addressing environmental issues.
