Tariq ibn Ziyad was a 7th-century Berber Muslim general who led the pivotal invasion of the Iberian Peninsula (modern-day Spain and Portugal) in 711 AD. His daring crossing of the Gibraltar Strait and subsequent campaign helped establish Muslim rule over much of the region, significantly shaping its history.
