Tariq ibn Ziyad

Tariq ibn Ziyad was a 7th-century Berber Muslim general who led the pivotal invasion of the Iberian Peninsula (modern-day Spain and Portugal) in 711 AD. His daring crossing of the Gibraltar Strait and subsequent campaign helped establish Muslim rule over much of the region, significantly shaping its history. Known for his strategic skill and leadership, Tariq’s efforts marked the beginning of the Islamic presence in Western Europe, which lasted for several centuries. His name is also associated with the famous phrase "The gates of Gibraltar," symbolizing a historic military breakthrough.
