Systemic fungal infections
Systemic fungal infections are illnesses caused by fungi that spread throughout the body, affecting various organs. Unlike superficial fungal infections, which are limited to the skin or nails, systemic infections can be serious and life-threatening. Common in people with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV, cancer, or on immunosuppressive medications, they can be caused by fungi like Candida, Aspergillus, or Cryptococcus. Symptoms may vary widely and include fever, coughing, or fatigue. Diagnosis often involves lab tests, and treatment typically requires antifungal medications, which can take time and may have side effects.
