Sumerian Law

Sumerian law refers to the legal system of ancient Sumer, one of the world's earliest civilizations, located in present-day Iraq. It encompassed rules governing behavior, property rights, trade, and family matters. The laws were often recorded on clay tablets and focused on justice and social order, ensuring fairness in transactions and personal conduct. Punishments for offenses varied, reflecting the severity of the crime, and included fines, restitution, or harsher penalties. The famous Code of Ur-Nammu, one of the earliest known legal codes, illustrates the principles of justice and equality prevalent in Sumerian society.
