Standards of Proof

Standards of proof refer to the level of certainty required to establish a claim or evidence in legal and other contexts. In criminal cases, the standard is "beyond a reasonable doubt," meaning there is no reasonable uncertainty about the accused's guilt. In civil cases, the standard is "preponderance of the evidence," indicating that one side's evidence is more convincing than the other's, usually understood as more than 50% likelihood. Higher standards ensure greater caution in decisions, especially where serious consequences are involved, such as potential loss of liberty or significant financial penalties.
