Srebrenica Massacre
The Srebrenica Massacre occurred in July 1995 during the Bosnian War. Bosnian Serb forces, led by General Ratko Mladić, captured the UN-protected town of Srebrenica and systematically killed over 8,000 Bosniak (Bosnian Muslim) men and boys. This act is widely regarded as genocide and was motivated by ethnic tensions arising from the breakup of Yugoslavia. The massacre highlighted the failure of international peacekeeping efforts and had significant repercussions, leading to trials for war crimes at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and ongoing discussions about human rights and accountability.
