Social validation theory suggests that people tend to look to others’ behaviors and opinions to determine what is correct or acceptable, especially in ambiguous situations. When unsure, individuals often confirm their choices or beliefs based on what others are doing or saying, assuming that the crowd’s actions reflect the right course. This tendency helps reduce uncertainty and provides social reassurance, fostering conformity. Essentially, social validation acts as a mental shortcut where social consensus influences individual decision-making, reinforcing shared norms and beliefs within a group.
