Situational irony

Situational irony occurs when there is a stark contrast between what is expected to happen and what actually happens. It's a twist of fate that surprises people because the outcome is often the opposite of what was anticipated. For example, a fire station burning down is ironic because one would expect a place dedicated to fighting fires to be the least susceptible to them. Situational irony highlights our assumptions and can often lead to humor or deeper reflection on circumstances.
