sinkholes

Sinkholes are natural depressions or holes that form in the Earth's surface when underlying rock, such as limestone, dissolves or collapses. This process often occurs gradually due to underground water flow eroding soluble rock, or suddenly when a support layer fails, causing the surface to subside or collapse. Factors like heavy rainfall, groundwater pumping, or construction can increase the risk. Sinkholes can vary in size from small depressions to large, dangerous chasms, impacting property and infrastructure. They are a natural part of karst landscapes but can pose hazards when unexpected or near populated areas.
