Sigmoidoscopy
Sigmoidoscopy is a medical procedure used to examine the lower part of the large intestine, specifically the sigmoid colon and rectum. During the procedure, a doctor inserts a flexible, tube-like instrument called a sigmoidoscope through the anus. This device has a light and camera, allowing the doctor to view and check for abnormalities, such as polyps, inflammation, or tumors. Sigmoidoscopy is often performed to investigate symptoms like rectal bleeding or changes in bowel habits, and it can also be used to screen for colorectal cancer. The procedure usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes and may involve some discomfort.
