sensory adaptation

Sensory adaptation is the process by which our senses become less sensitive to constant or unchanging stimuli over time. For example, when you first enter a room with a strong smell, it may be overpowering, but after a while, you hardly notice it. This occurs because our brain adjusts to the ongoing sensory input, allowing us to focus on new or changing stimuli instead. Sensory adaptation helps us conserve attention and energy by filtering out repetitive information, enabling us to respond more effectively to changes in our environment.
