Selective Service System
The Selective Service System is a U.S. government agency responsible for maintaining information on individuals eligible for military conscription. It requires male U.S. citizens and immigrants between ages 18 and 25 to register, ensuring readiness in case a draft becomes necessary. Although the draft has not been active since 1973, registration is a legal obligation and helps the government plan for potential national security needs. Registration is separate from voluntary military enlistment and does not mean a person will be called to serve, but it keeps the option available if a draft is reinstated.
