Secondary Immunodeficiency Disorders

Secondary immunodeficiency disorders occur when the immune system becomes weakened due to external factors, rather than being inherited. These factors can include infections (like HIV), chronic diseases (such as diabetes), certain medications (like chemotherapy), or malnutrition. As a result, the body becomes more susceptible to infections and illnesses because it is less able to fight them off. Unlike primary immunodeficiency disorders, which are genetic, secondary immunodeficiencies can often be reversed or improved by addressing the underlying cause.
