Schistosomiasis
Schistosomiasis is a disease caused by tiny parasitic worms found in freshwater. People become infected when they come into contact with contaminated water, where the larvae enter the skin. The infection can lead to symptoms like abdominal pain, diarrhea, and fatigue, and can cause long-term health problems such as liver damage or urinary issues. It’s common in tropical and subtropical regions, particularly in areas with poor sanitation. Preventing schistosomiasis involves avoiding swimming or wading in infested waters and improving sanitation to reduce exposure to the parasites.
