Royal Proclamation

The Royal Proclamation of 1763 was issued by King George III of Britain after the Seven Years' War. It aimed to organize British territories in North America and establish guidelines for colonial expansion. The proclamation restricted settlers from moving west of the Appalachian Mountains, reserving that land for Indigenous peoples. It sought to prevent conflicts between settlers and Native Americans and to regulate trade and land purchases. The proclamation is considered a significant document in early Canadian history and Indigenous relations, as it recognized Indigenous land rights and laid the groundwork for future treaties.
