Rosenwald Schools

Rosenwald Schools were a network of educational institutions built for African American children in the early 20th century, particularly in the rural South. Funded by philanthropist Julius Rosenwald and local communities, these schools aimed to provide quality education during a time of segregation and limited resources. Between 1912 and 1932, over 5,000 schools were constructed, greatly improving educational opportunities for Black students. The schools emphasized vocational training alongside traditional subjects, helping to empower communities and promote self-sufficiency. Rosenwald Schools played a significant role in advancing education and civil rights for African Americans prior to the civil rights movement.
