Richard of York
Richard of York, the 3rd Duke of York (1411-1460), was a key figure in the Wars of the Roses, a series of civil wars for the English throne during the 15th century. He claimed the throne based on his royal lineage, challenging the ruling Lancastrian family. His rivalry with King Henry VI led to pivotal battles and political intrigue. Richard's efforts to secure power ultimately resulted in his death at the Battle of Wakefield, but his legacy continued through his descendants, including Edward IV, who became king, establishing the Yorkist line in English history.
