PTH-related peptide (PTHrP)

PTH-related peptide (PTHrP) is a protein that is similar to parathyroid hormone (PTH) and plays a role in regulating calcium levels in the body. While PTH primarily comes from the parathyroid glands, PTHrP can be produced by various tissues, especially during growth or in certain diseases. It helps control processes such as bone development and calcium metabolism. In some cases, notably certain cancers, high levels of PTHrP can lead to increased calcium in the blood, which can cause health issues. Thus, understanding PTHrP is important in both normal biology and disease contexts.
