RANKL (Receptor Activator of Nuclear Factor Kappa-Β Ligand)
RANKL (Receptor Activator of Nuclear Factor Kappa-B Ligand) is a protein that plays a key role in bone health by regulating the activity of cells called osteoclasts, which break down bone tissue. It binds to a specific receptor on osteoclast precursors, promoting their development into active cells that resorb or dissolve bone. This process is essential for bone remodeling, growth, and repair. Imbalances in RANKL levels can lead to bone diseases; excess RANKL may cause bone loss (as in osteoporosis), while reduced RANKL activity can impair bone turnover.
