Protected Geographical Indication

Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) is a label used to signify that a product comes from a specific region and possesses qualities or a reputation linked to that location. This protection helps preserve the uniqueness of products like foods, drinks, and crafts, ensuring that only those made in the designated area, following traditional methods, can use the PGI label. For example, “Prosecco” from Italy can only be labeled as such if it’s made in the Prosecco region, thereby safeguarding its authenticity and quality, while also supporting local producers and their economies.
