Privateers
Privateers were privately owned ships authorized by a government to attack foreign vessels during wartime. This authorization came in the form of a letter of marque, granting them legal permission to seize enemy ships and cargo. Unlike pirates, who operated unlawfully, privateers acted under the jurisdiction of their country, often sharing profits with the government. They played a significant role in naval conflicts, as they supplemented official naval forces with additional ships and manpower. Privateering was especially prominent from the 16th to the 19th centuries, contributing to maritime warfare strategies and economic interests.
