Pride's Purge

Pride’s Purge was a political event in December 1648 during the English Civil War, when soldiers and soldiers-influenced members forcibly removed members of Parliament who supported negotiations with King Charles I. This resulted in the Rump Parliament, a smaller group committed to trying and executing the king, leading to the abolition of the monarchy and the establishment of a republican commonwealth. The purge solidified the influence of the military and radical political groups, dramatically shaping England’s constitutional future and marking a turning point from monarchy to republicanism.
