Pressure ulcer
A pressure ulcer, also known as a bed sore, is an injury to the skin and underlying tissue caused by prolonged pressure on the skin. This often occurs in people who are confined to a bed or wheelchair and cannot change their position easily. The constant pressure reduces blood flow to the area, leading to damage. Pressure ulcers typically form over bony areas like heels, hips, and backs. They can range from minor skin redness to deep wounds and can be serious if not properly managed, leading to infections and complications. Prevention involves regular repositioning and good skin care.
