Peter of Alcántara was a Spanish Franciscan priest and mystic born in 1499. He is known for his deep spirituality, commitment to prayer, and reform of the Franciscan Order, emphasizing a life of simplicity and austerity. Peter played a significant role in the Counter-Reformation, striving to revive spiritual fervor among Catholics during a time of crisis in the Church. He founded several religious communities and was known for his teachings on contemplation and the inner life of faith. Canonized as a saint in 1669, he is the patron saint of the Spanish region of Extremadura.
