persistent vegetative state

A persistent vegetative state (PVS) is a medical condition where a person has lost cognitive function and awareness but maintains basic life functions, such as breathing and sleep-wake cycles. This condition often follows severe brain injury, and the individual may open their eyes and exhibit reflexive movements but does not respond to stimuli in a meaningful way. PVS can last for months or years, and the chances of recovery diminish over time. It is distinct from a coma, where a person does not exhibit any wakefulness or awareness at all.
