Parkin

Parkin is a protein that plays a crucial role in protecting cells, especially nerve cells, by helping to identify and remove damaged or malfunctioning parts through a process called mitochondrial quality control. It functions as an enzyme that tags defective mitochondria—cellular power plants—for destruction and recycling. Mutations in the Parkin gene can impair this cleaning process, leading to the accumulation of damaged mitochondria, which is associated with the development of Parkinson's disease. In short, Parkin helps maintain healthy cell function by ensuring damaged components are efficiently cleared out.
