Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS)
Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) are chemicals that harm the ozone layer, a protective shield in the Earth's atmosphere that absorbs harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. Common ODS include chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), halons, and certain solvents. These substances were widely used in refrigeration, air conditioning, and aerosol sprays. When released into the atmosphere, they rise and break down ozone molecules, leading to ozone depletion. This increases UV radiation reaching the Earth's surface, which can cause skin cancer, cataracts, and harm to ecosystems. International agreements like the Montreal Protocol aim to reduce and eliminate the use of ODS.
