Oskar II (1829-1907) was King of Sweden from 1872 until his death in 1907 and also briefly King of Norway from 1872 to 1905. He was the last king to rule both countries before their peaceful separation. Oskar II was known for promoting modernization and industrialization in Sweden. His reign saw significant social and political changes, including the expansion of democracy and the welfare state. A patron of the arts and education, he also focused on international diplomacy. Oskar II was a member of the Bernadotte dynasty, which continues to reign in Sweden today.
