Osamu Shimomura

Osamu Shimomura was a Japanese biochemist renowned for his discovery of green fluorescent protein (GFP) in the 1960s. GFP, found in jellyfish, glows bright green when exposed to ultraviolet light. This discovery has had a profound impact on biological research, allowing scientists to track cellular processes and visualize proteins in living organisms. For his groundbreaking work, Shimomura shared the 2008 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with two other scientists. His contributions have transformed the fields of molecular biology and biochemistry, providing crucial tools for studying life at the cellular level.
