Oil-for-Food Programme

The Oil-for-Food Programme was established by the United Nations in 1995 to help Iraq manage the humanitarian crisis caused by international sanctions after its invasion of Kuwait. Under this program, Iraq could sell oil and use the proceeds to buy food, medicine, and other essentials for its citizens. The goal was to alleviate suffering while maintaining pressure on the Iraqi government. Unfortunately, the program faced criticism and allegations of corruption, as some funds were mismanaged and misused, leading to a complex legacy regarding its effectiveness and ethical considerations.
