Nicaea (modern-day İznik, Turkey)
Nicaea, now known as İznik in modern-day Turkey, was a significant city in ancient times, especially known for the First Council of Nicaea in 325 AD. This meeting of Christian bishops was called by Emperor Constantine to address disputes within the Christian Church, primarily concerning the nature of Christ and the Arian controversy. The council resulted in the Nicene Creed, a statement of Christian faith that is still widely used today. Nicaea was also an important center for trade and culture, with its impressive architectural remains, including the city walls and the Hagia Sophia of Nicaea.
