NEPA (National Environmental Policy Act)
The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), enacted in 1969, is a U.S. law that requires federal agencies to assess the environmental impacts of their proposed actions before making decisions. This process involves preparing detailed reports, known as Environmental Assessments (EAs) or Environmental Impact Statements (EISs), to evaluate how projects might affect air, water, wildlife, and communities. NEPA aims to ensure that environmental factors are considered in federal planning and decision-making, promoting transparency and public involvement, thereby helping to protect the environment while allowing for necessary development.
