Negro Theatre Project

The Negro Theatre Project was an initiative during the Great Depression, part of the Federal Theatre Project under the New Deal. It aimed to support African American artists and create culturally relevant theater. Established in 1936, it provided employment for actors, writers, and musicians and fostered a unique black theatrical voice by showcasing plays that addressed racial issues and celebrated black heritage. The project helped to elevate African American theater, making it more visible and accessible, and contributed significantly to the arts during a time of economic hardship.
