Monte Cassino
Monte Cassino refers to a series of battles that took place in Italy during World War II, from January to May 1944. The site includes a historic Benedictine monastery on a hilltop, which became a strategic point for controlling the roads across Italy. Allied forces aimed to break through German defenses to advance toward Rome. The fighting was intense and marked by heavy casualties. After months of conflict, the Allies eventually captured Monte Cassino in May 1944, paving the way for their advance and contributing significantly to the eventual liberation of Italy. The monastery was famously destroyed but later rebuilt.
