Mitochondrial membranes

Mitochondrial membranes are the two layers that surround mitochondria, the cell's powerhouses that produce energy. The outer membrane is smooth and allows molecules to pass through easily, while the inner membrane is highly folded and contains proteins essential for energy production. This inner membrane creates compartments that help generate adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of cells.
