Medial Collateral Ligament

The medial collateral ligament (MCL) is a strong band of tissue inside the knee that connects the thigh bone (femur) to the shin bone (tibia). It helps stabilize the knee joint, especially preventing the knee from buckling inward during movement. Injuries to the MCL often occur from twisting motions or direct blows to the outside of the knee, leading to stretching or tearing of the ligament. Treatment varies from rest and physical therapy to, in severe cases, surgical repair. The MCL plays a vital role in maintaining knee stability and allowing safe, functional movement.
