Matthew Fontaine Maury

Matthew Fontaine Maury (1806–1873) was an American naval officer, oceanographer, and maritime researcher, often referred to as the "Father of Oceanography." He is best known for his pioneering work in studying wind and ocean currents, which significantly improved maritime navigation. Maury created comprehensive charts of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, including the famous "Maury’s Wind and Current Charts." He also advocated for international cooperation in ocean studies. His efforts laid the groundwork for modern oceanography and contributed to advancements in naval science, making sea travel safer and more efficient during the 19th century.
