Marasmus
Marasmus is a severe form of malnutrition caused by an extreme deficiency of calories and nutrients, particularly protein, in a person’s diet. It typically affects young children and leads to significant weight loss, muscle wasting, and very weakness. Despite having enough calories from foods like cereals or vegetables, the lack of essential nutrients causes the body to break down its own tissues for energy. Symptoms include very thin limbs, a prominent rib cage, dry skin, and an overall look of extreme emaciation. Without treatment, marasmus can be life-threatening but can often be managed with proper nutritional support.
