Liberation of Goa
The Liberation of Goa occurred on December 19, 1961, when Indian armed forces ended Portuguese colonial rule in Goa, Daman, and Diu, regions Portugal had controlled for over 450 years. Despite negotiations, Portugal refused to relinquish these territories, prompting India to launch a military operation called "Operation Vijay." The operation swiftly integrated Goa into India, ending centuries of Portuguese sovereignty. This event marked the end of European colonial presence in India and was seen as a step toward national unity and independence. Today, December 19th is celebrated as Goa Liberation Day, commemorating the region’s integration into India.
