Leishmania donovani
Leishmania donovani is a microscopic parasite that causes visceral leishmaniasis, also known as kala-azar, primarily in parts of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. It is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected sandflies. Once inside the body, it invades organs like the spleen and liver, leading to symptoms such as fever, weight loss, swelling, and anemia. If untreated, it can be fatal. Diagnosis is usually made through blood tests, and treatment involves specific antileisharial medications. Controlling the disease relies on reducing sandfly populations and early medical intervention.
