Kuomintang (KMT)
The Kuomintang (KMT), also known as the Nationalist Party, is a major political party in Taiwan originally founded in China in 1919. It played a central role in overthrowing the Qing Dynasty and establishing the Republic of China. Historically, the KMT upheld Chinese nationalism, modernization, and anti-communism. After losing the Chinese Civil War to the Communist Party in 1949, the KMT retreated to Taiwan, where it continued to govern for several decades. Today, the KMT remains influential in Taiwanese politics, advocating for closer ties with Mainland China and balancing development with maintaining Taiwan's sovereignty.
