Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA)
The Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) was an ethnic Albanian paramilitary organization formed in the late 1990s to fight for independence from Serbia in Kosovo. They aimed to defend Albanian inhabitants and establish a separate, independent Kosovo. The KLA conducted military operations against Serbian forces, which led to heightened conflict and international intervention. Their actions were controversial: some viewed them as freedom fighters, others as militants violating human rights. In 1999, NATO intervened with military action to stop violence and facilitate a UN-led process, ultimately leading to Kosovo declaring independence in 2008.
