Kitchener's Army
Kitchener's Army was a volunteer military force in Britain formed during World War I, starting in 1914. Named after Lord Kitchener, the army was created to quickly bolster British forces after the war began, since the regular army was too small. Ordinary civilians signed up to serve, motivated by patriotism and a sense of duty, rather than being conscripted. This volunteer army played a significant role in early battles and helped expand Britain’s military capabilities during the war. It marked a shift toward mass volunteer recruitment, emphasizing national effort and unity in wartime.
