Khaled al-As'ad was a prominent Syrian archaeologist known for his extensive work in the ancient city of Palmyra, a UNESCO World Heritage site. In 2015, during the Syrian Civil War, he was captured and tragically executed by ISIS for refusing to reveal the location of hidden artifacts.
