Ketone bodies

Ketone bodies are molecules produced by the liver from fat when blood sugar levels are low, such as during fasting or a low-carbohydrate diet. They serve as an alternative energy source for the brain and muscles when glucose isn't readily available. The main ketone bodies are acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate, and acetone. This process helps the body maintain energy balance and supports survival during extended periods without food. Elevated ketone levels can occur in ketosis and are also present in diabetic ketoacidosis, a serious condition requiring medical attention.
